  1. I had a few hiccups here and there regarding the wiki, for example when I’m done editing my work, the save request would not allow me to do so, where I ended up having to open another wiki on maybe Mozilla than I would copy what I had on the other wiki onto the new one, secondly the saved information sometimes would not be the way as I had laid it out during the editing process. This started being frustrating but then again these minor problems are sometimes not avoidable as technology has its own way of doing things.

The new approach of learning that I have been introduced to by Ms Titus I honestly have enjoyed it, simply because through this way I was able to conduct research and go in-depth with a lot of topics that I previously didn’t identify with and it gave me the opportunity to educate myself by distinguishing between legal ambushing and illegal ambushing, to understand the impact/effectiveness of traditional marketing strategies vs. online marketing in the marketing environment.

Even though the class set-up learning is also effective, now that I have been exposed to this learning I think it would have much more impact on the learning outcomes required by respective modules, simply because it provides me the opportunity to discover more interesting issues surrounding the topic, secondly this form of learning increases awareness of how serious things are surrounding the marketing through sport environment. For example, ambush marketing, I immediately considered this form of marketing as totally unethical, simply because I was not fully aware of the whole context of the strategy, now that I was given this task, where I was able to gather a lot of information, explore how long before this strategy has been in practise, I was able to critically analyse the reasons behind it.

Assignments provided to students are also effective, but this form of gathering information I think is more interesting and fun because after putting information in words, the wiki also allows us to include links, widget (you tube videos), pictures etc., which I think is an awesome way of learning. The wiki has made me more familiar with a lot of technological “way of doing things” which would later help me in the working environment to being on par with technological transformation. At this time and age I think it is vital that individuals are exposed to the technological change occurring in order to be more efficient, knowledgeable and skilled when it comes to playing around with the technology.

The advantage of the wiki I think is the fact that lecturers (Ms Titus) would then be able to have a saved wiki in case the lecturer would want to lecturer in class with it, introduce the wiki to a new class that would be unfamiliar with a wiki, as reference of how it could look.

Yes it was our first time but I think we have done a pretty good job of it. Keep it up Ms Titus I totally enjoyed it. I’m hoping next time groups would work more efficiently together.

The blog could’ve been enjoyable if my fellow group members made use of the blog. But it could’ve been an interesting platform.

    I enjoyed the wiki though…

  2. Reflection Piece

I have to first thank you Ms Titus for exposing us to such a wonderful way of learning. At first I was skeptic about the whole distance learning idea especially doing group work assignments. I was not sure how it would work out. But I think it went fairly okay. I must say the entire experience has forced us all to learn to trust. Doing group work is not easy in general because of many things but doing distant group work I imagined would be more difficult and this was not the case. I got frustrated at some point when I added stuff on the wiki and when I logged on at a later stage, I would find that the information deleted. It frustrated me because I was not sure whether it was because what I had added had no value or whether it was accidental. So because of the very little communication with the group, it made it difficult to really know what everyone was planning and thinking. Nevertheless I am content with the way things panned out. I am quite impressed with how everyone just took up responsibility and did their part. Well done team.

I am also very impressed with the entire wiki system and the thought behind it was and is extremely awesome. Whoever thought of it is a genius. I somehow wish this was used in all of the courses, especially at Post-graduate level. It gives one the opportunity to be out in the world of work and gain experience and study at the same time. I have noticed how powerful the SRM Honours degree is by being here at the ICSSPE office. I am able to assist and give ideas to the marketing department and comment on the marketing strategies that this sport organization is using confidently because I am forced to read up about sponsorships, ambush marketing and branding for the wiki page and also because I am working with group members who have different ideas and share them on this page. It really is phenomenal. I have learnt a lot from the wiki experience and wish that more students would be exposed to this type of learning.

I have had the opportunity to show some of my colleagues the wiki and they were very impressed. Those that are currently doing their masters were wishing that they I wish that they had been exposed to something of the same nature as wiki. I believe and hope that this is a step forward for learning institutions in Southern Africa. I think it will be a challenge at first for people who are not technologically inclined, but I believe that it would be a very effective way of communication and generating new knowledge.

I must admit that I am one of those people who are not really with the crowd and learn the new technology as it comes out. I am a late bloomer when it comes to learning and using the latest technology, hence blogging was a huge challenge for me. I have now learnt the art and will be sure to keep using it as I see the impact it can have in the world of sport and the business world in general.
